One classroom team at Hager Preschool spread some cheer to Wednesday, delivering donated pies to their students and the children’s families to show appreciation of the support given during a difficult time of learning.

“With distance learning, it’s been really trying on our families who have young students because their students just don’t get on their computer on their own, they have to be encouraged and helped a lot,” said Hager Preschool teacher Natasha Staples. “We just thought it would be nice to show our appreciation for all that they do to help us.”

Staples, along with teacher assistants Heather McHenry and Cindy Burden, delivered a total of 16 pies. The pies were donated by Ole South Barbeque, Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn, Cracker Barrel, and Kroger (Frederica Street location).

Before the schools transitioned back to virtual learning, Staples’ students created recipes that included their favorite food that their parents cook for Thanksgiving. Staples said she and her staff had fun helping the students make their version of the recipes — which included everything from chicken being cooked for 2 minutes to broccoli being cooked to 6 hours on the stove.

Those recipes were also delivered to families along with the pies.

Staples said they hope the show of appreciation will reignite the families’ effort to continue working with their students at home during this second round of distant learning. She stressed that the schools couldn’t do it without the family support.

“I really enjoy seeing my students,” she said. “It just makes me really happy to know that people are still out there trying to support everybody and trying to make things continue to happen for our kids.”
