The GO FAME earn-and-learn program at Owensboro Community & Technical College is hosting a virtual open house and employer panel discussion for interested new students on March 30. Classes begin August 16.

The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom (link here, meeting ID 930 199 09269). This virtual event will include a tour of the facility, a program overview, and a question-and-answer panel discussion featuring GO FAME companies and students.

OCTC’s GO FAME program began in 2015 and was modeled from Toyota’s nationally recognized training program. Since that time, 58 students have earned an Associate in Applied Science degree as Advanced Manufacturing Technicians (AMT), with more on target to graduate in May.

GO FAME students attend college classes two days per week and work in a manufacturing facility three days per week. In addition to paying the students an hourly wage, sponsoring companies cover the equivalency of 50% of the students’ out-of-pocket tuition. Students are paired at the worksite with a mentor, who serves as a guide and role model throughout the program.

Employers benefit from developing highly skilled technicians who understand a unique job function and become integrated into the organization’s overall culture and business practices. OCTC expanded the GO FAME model to include Computerized Manufacturing and Machining (CMM).

Companies currently sponsoring GO FAME students include: Waupaca Foundry, Toyotetsu MidAmerica (TTMA), Metalsa Owensboro Inc., ADM Industries Inc., Whitworth Tool Inc., Industrial Mold & Machine Co., Omico Plastics Inc., Big Rivers Electric Corporation, Regional Water Resource Agency (RWRA), Unifirst, and U.S. Bank.

Companies interested in joining the GO FAME Chapter should contact OCTC Director of Employer Engagement Katie Vincent at [email protected] 270-686-4423.

GO FAME is currently accepting applications to begin in August 2021, for both the AMT and CMM track. The deadline to apply has been extended until May 3. Interested students are encouraged to attend the virtual open house, contact [email protected], call 606-278-0209, or apply here.
