With a full return to in-person classes now only days away, Owensboro Public Schools has created a new position and is looking to hire several people to help maintain Healthy at School guidelines.

The position is called a “Schools Service Assistant,” and OPS officials said roughly one per school is needed across the district.

Duties include temperature checks, cleaning high-touch areas, monitoring the lunchroom, mask enforcement, and helping with contract tracing, among other things. There will be no instruction-related responsibilities.

Full-time and part-time positions are available — both of which qualify for the school system’s classified benefits package.

“In addition to knowing we needed some additional help, it also provides an opportunity for people who maybe lost their job because of the pandemic and haven’t been rehired yet,” said Jared Revlett, the OPS Public Information Officer. “It gives them an opportunity to get some employment.”

Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED. Experience working with children is preferred but not required. Candidates must be able to pass a background check.

The positions only last until the end of the school year, which is officially June 30. Officials are unsure if the position will be renewed for the upcoming school year.

“Once school is out, they’ll have some opportunities to get some hours helping finalize the school buildings for the summer time — cleaning stuff up or rearranging rooms or whatever that may be,” Revlett said.

Those interested in applying can do so here. Candidates will not necessarily be assigned to the school they apply for, as Revlett said the district will place the assistants where needed.

OPS is also looking to fill other positions, including custodians, instructional assistants, specific teacher and counselor positions, and a district-wide computer maintenance technician. Visit the OPS employment site for more information.
