After spending the last nine years as a teacher at Foust Elementary, Ashlie Hurley has been named as the district’s new English Language (EL) Student Services Coordinator. Hurley will officially move into the new role effective July 1.

“The creation of this position provided a unique opportunity for me to continue working with our English language learners, but from a district-wide approach,” Hurley said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching nearly every grade during my time at Foust and especially helping our Burmese and Hispanic population feel at home at our school. I’m excited about having the opportunity to work with these students and their families as they continue to grow in our district and throughout their school careers, not just at the elementary level.”

Hurley has taught in grades 1-4 during her time at Foust, most recently as the Virtual Academy teacher for 3rd- and 4th-grade students this school year. Hurley earned her Bachelor of Science in Special Education and Elementary Education from Brescia University, and both her Masters in Teacher Leadership and her Rank I in Supervisor of Instruction, Education Specialist from University of the Cumberlands.

District officials said Hurley’s ability to connect with the district’s refugee and migrant population at Foust Elementary was evident from the day she began student teaching at Foust.

“Ashlie has a remarkable reputation for successfully reaching and teaching Burmese and Hispanic students,” said Foust Principal Janie Moseley. ”She is especially well-known with the Burmese community and is still relied upon by current and former students in times of need. She has a natural ability to develop relationships with students and parents which will make her a valuable asset to the district as a whole.”

In this new role, Hurley will be responsible for implementing, facilitating and directing all services related to the EL program in a manner that fosters continued growth and independence for EL students and their families.

“This is a position that our district desperately needed in order to ensure we are achieving our mission of serving the whole child with every child in our district,” said Owensboro Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Matthew Constant. “Mrs. Hurley’s track record of serving our EL population at Foust bodes well for the future growth and well-being of our entire EL population across the district and we are thrilled to add her valuable qualities to our district as a whole.”
