Principal of Tamarack Elementary School Carrie Munsey has been known to say “if you’re not first, you’re last,” out of her competitive nature. Although she is competitive outside of school, Munsey is just as competitive when it comes to how she leads as a principal.

“I am so competitive, and I always push our teachers to be number one, be the best that you can be every single day,” Munsey said.

Munsey on Friday was officially present her Excellence in Leadership Award from the Kentucky Association of Professional Educators.

To Munsey, it is important to cultivate the talent of teachers and establish high expectations of students and building those relationships.

To cultivate those relationships, Munsey is never in her office. She takes time to learn the students’ names as they’re coming off the bus, stops into classrooms when she can, and makes home visits when necessary.

“I really learn their stories,” Munsey said.

When she was alerted she won the award, Munsey was completely surprised as the nomination letter had been sent unknowingly. While it may have come as a surprise, her mentality is staying the same when it comes to leading her staff.

“We want to do the very best we can and we always want to be on the top,” Munsey said.
