Owensboro Middle School students are gathering donations until the end of the semester for a nonprofit in Africa.

Before the school let out for Fall Break, Magen Gray’s 7th-grade English class finished the book “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park. The book tells the story of Salva Dut, who is one of the thousands of people who had to flee Sudan during their Civil War.

Dut was able to seek refuge in the United States after years of treacherous conditions.

Dut started a nonprofit to help people in South Sudan who do not have access to clean water, which inspired the OMS students to donate toward Dut’s organization.

Donations happen during lunch and the 7th- and 8th-graders are in competition to see who can collect the most money. Their current goal set is $500 but Gray hopes to collect more.
