Apollo High School seniors Ralee Calhoun and Keaton Leigh have been awarded Heisman High School Scholarships. The program recognizes and rewards “outstanding scholar-athletes who understand that the most important victories not only happen on the field, but in their schools and communities.”

Calhoun and Leigh are among 5,700 students across the country who have been named school-level winners in the competition, and advance now for consideration for state-level honors.

Calhoun has been a varsity cheerleader at Apollo from her freshman to junior years, serving as team leader her sophomore and junior years. She earned the UCA All-American Award her sophomore year. She is a member of the AHS student council and has served as class secretary for three years.

Calhoun is enrolled in the Early College Academy and will graduate from Apollo with an associate in arts degree. She plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University, majoring in homeland security with a minor in criminal justice. She is the daughter of Marcus and Mindy Calhoun of Owensboro.

Leigh is a six-year member and current team captain of the AHS swim team. He has been involved with student council and Kentucky Youth Assembly for four years, and Academy for Young Leaders for two years. Leigh has been an altar server at St. Stephen Cathedral for seven years, where he also trains new servers, and volunteers at the Daviess County Gun Club.

Leigh plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University, working toward degrees in forensic biology with a career goal of working in the field of criminal justice. His hobbies include assembling computers and shooting clay targets. He is the son of Ross and Jill Leigh of Owensboro.

The Heisman High School Scholarship program recognizes student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding character and service to others, while maintaining a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and participating in a qualifying sport.

From an applicant pool of thousands of high school scholar-athletes graduating with the class of 2022, more than 5,700 wer named school winners in the Heisman High School Scholarship competition awarded by The Heisman Trophy Trust and Acceptance Insurance.

School Winners will continue on for the chance to become state winners, national finalists, or national winners.
