Owensboro Community & Technical College is offering a Fiber Optic Systems course beginning in January 2022 on Thursday evenings. The course is designed for prospective students who may have full-time day jobs.

The introductory course covers the theory of fiber optics including loss calculations, splices, and connections. It will also include a hands-on component that covers several types of termination, loss measurement, fusion splicing, and Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) use. No prior experience or pre-requisites are necessary, but a working knowledge of electronics/electricity is beneficial.

The course will be taught by Matt Monsour, Associate Professor in the Computer & Information Technologies program. Classes are scheduled for Thursdays from 5:30-8:15 p.m. beginning Jan. 13, and will last 16 weeks. There is a limit of ten students due to equipment availability.

Students who pass the final exam with the appropriate score will become Certified Fiber Optic Technicians, an industry certification offered by the Fiber Optics Association. For questions related to the course or certification, contact [email protected] or call 270-686-4643.

Interested students may apply to OCTC at Owensboro.kctcs.edu.
