Play Smart — an early learning facility focused on social-emotional learning — has openings for the 2022-2023 academic year in their kindergarten. Play Smart launched in August 2021, with officials saying it is the region’s first play-based, phonics-focused kindergarten.

“Play Smart is building an inclusive, engaging learning community for children and their families, one focused on emphasizing social-emotional skills through a Social Thinking curriculum, and one rooted in sensitivity to children with developmental disabilities,” according to a release from Play Smart.

According to the release, Play Smart’s kindergarten offers small class sizes, no standardized testing, and is screen-free (meaning focused on interaction on play with no technology devices).

“The kindergarten features instruction through programs including reading through stories, play-based learning initiatives and STEAM activities, and the question formulation technique. The kindergarten is designed to be interactive, promote engagement with peers where students learn to be good neighbors, friends, and community members, and develop strong literacy skills,” according to the release.

According to their website, a child must be 5 years old or older by Aug. 1 to be eligible to register. The first day of school will be Aug. 11. The class will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with late pick-up available until 5 p.m. Before- and after-school care is also available.

Trina Pryor and Jill Payne are co-owners of Play Smart, which was established in 2018 and is located at 1512 Frederica Street. Play Smart also offers a pre-school and 1st-grade class.
