Owensboro Public Schools has named Kevin Thompson the district’s Director of Pupil Personnel, effective July 1. Thompson will replace George Powell, who will be retiring June 30.

Thomspon will be responsible for coordinating the combined resources of the schools, community agencies, and parents to correct poor student attendance patterns and assist students and parents in overcoming the problems which threaten continuous progress in school.

“I am extremely humbled and honored to be chosen for this position,” Thompson said. “I am excited about the opportunity to get to work with the students, parents and staff in our school system. My goal is to create opportunities for students that will allow them to be successful and to provide support for our schools and their staff. I believe that all students can be successful when provided the proper support.”

Thompson has 30 years of experience in education and administrative leadership, and has worked for OPS for nearly 20 years. He most recently served as the Director of Alternative Services, where he’s overseen Emerson Academy and the STRIVE program since 2017. He was the Owensboro Middle School assistant principal from 2005-2017.

“Kevin has truly been an asset for our alternative programs in our district for many years,” said OPS Superintendent Dr. Matthew Constant. “Having him transition into this new role will allow us to continue our efforts addressing the needs of our students and ensuring they are receiving the best possible education.”
