After Ashley Evans-Smith’s first 60 days as Executive Director of CASA, she said she has experienced some challenges. But one hope she has is to grow the volunteers they have in the nonprofit.

CASA, which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates, has 57 volunteers that help with the children that are in the family court system.

According to Evans-Smith, 23% of cases in the family court system have a volunteer assigned and that’s stretching their volunteers as much as they can. They serve children from birth to 18 years old, and in special cases up to age 21.

At its core, CASA hopes to provide its clients with some form of stability during their trials.

“These children need a person to be on their side,” Evans-Smith said.

When it comes to the volunteers, Evans-Smith said they typically serve about 10 hours per month on one case. Volunteers have the potential to have one or more children on the cases.

Evans-Smith said that they try their best to ensure the child has a safe and permanent home and are always accepting more volunteers.
