The Green River Area Down Syndrome Association (GRADSA) annual Buddy Walk returns to downtown Owensboro on Oct. 23. This is the 25th year for the event which, despite some restrictions, will resemble its more traditional form.

The walk will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and feature face paintings, food trucks, a photo booth, and performances from some of GRADSA’s finest in their rendition of America’s Got Talent. Independence Bank is this year’s title sponsor.

“It truly is the most largely attended celebration of all things Down syndrome in our community each year,” said GRADSA Executive Director Tiffany Thrash. “It is not only fun, but heartwarming, and will allow people to connect and mingle with others in the community who support awareness and equality.”

The event also includes obstacle courses and pumpkin decorating. Participants will also have an opportunity to meet WWA wrestlers.

Billboards promoting the event are up all over town and feature several GRADSA members. The association encourages the community to snap pictures in front of the billboards and tag them on social media.

New to this year’s event is a “Teacher Advocate” award presented on stage at the walk. The award will go to each a teacher who creates a Buddy Walk team and gets at least 30 people to join their team by the day of the event.

“We love our community, and we are so thankful for the continued support shown,” Thrash said. “We have more sponsors this year than we’ve ever had, and that means awareness is progressing, and businesses are giving back.

GRADSA is also hosting their inaugural Chili for a CaUsE fundraiser on Oct. 22 ahead of the Buddy Walk. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at WBKR and offer attendees a cup of chili, a goody bag, and more.

A 12-ounce cup of chili, crackers, and a drink costs $5.  Free delivery is available for orders of 10 or more.

Additionally, trick-or-treat bags full of gift certificates to local businesses are available to all who can show that they’ve registered for the Buddy Walk.

“What is more festive this time of year than chili? It screams fall,” Thrash said. “All proceeds will go toward our Buddy Walk fundraising totals, and so far, we are on pace to exceed all other years in attendance and funds. It truly is amazing.”

To pre-order, email Thrash at [email protected] or text her at 479-223-1234.
