Junior Achievement of West Kentucky has received a $10,000 grant from State Farm Insurance, with the funds dedicated to providing service learning opportunities to high school students to hone essential skills and improve the local workforce.

“We are grateful for State Farm’s donation and investment in our area’s future workforce and look forward to building upon this partnership with the great corporate friend they are for this community,” said JA President Dan Douglas.

Tommy Rowland, Regional Agency Sales Leader for State Farm said they were excited to present the $10,000 Community Grant.

“(The grant) focuses on safety, community development, economic empowerment and education,” Rowland said. “Service learning and enabling our young people and future workforce to be better prepared for their future is of great interest and focus of State Farm.”

The mission of JA is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. They teach students in grades K-12 about work-readiness, financial literacy and entrepreneurship through experiential, hands-on programming.

They are actively impacting over 21,000 students annually in Daviess and other surrounding counties.

Desiree Tucker, program manager at Junior Achivement of Western Kentucky, recently put a call to action on Facebook to encourage the community to volunteer. Tucker said they are looking for community members, parents, retired teachers, corporate partners and more to go into the classroom and share the JA lessons.

Each person that volunteers will receive hands-on training to make sure they are 100% ready to go into the classroom and share the lessons. They will be provided with a guide book and all materials provided to be successful.

In the elementary setting, JA consists of five 45-minute visits. In the middle to high school setting, JA consists of six to seven 45-minute visits, depending on the program.

Tucker said the volunteer will be partnered with an educator and their classroom, and they will be with the same classroom until the program is finished.
