Volunteer Owensboro is launching a new program encouraging everyone in the community to visit local nonprofits to learn about what they do along with their volunteering opportunities. The “Serve Our City” program debuts Saturday and runs through April 8, with 16 nonprofits holding open houses.

Randy Lanham, executive director of Volunteer Owensboro, said attendees are not required to commit to anything. The program is all about learning about different ways to serve, he said.

“My hope is that families, friends, coworkers, church groups, get together and go to some of these places to find where would be a good fit for them,” he said.

Lanham said the idea came from thinking about his family. They are not going out of town for spring break, and they were looking at ways to volunteer together.

“So it made me think other folks in our community might want to do the same,” he said. “I love the fact that we can go learn all about it and at the end of all the different places we go to, we can decide what fits our family the best.”

The list of nonprofits and their open house details are below. You can also find out more about the program or about Volunteer Owensboro at their website here.
