Beverly’s Hearty Slice gives away 100 smartphones, food and more to community

Beverly’s Hearty Slice on Friday gifted 100 smartphones to families in the community thanks to a partnership with Excess Telecom Wireless. The nonprofit also gave away gift cards and the traditional “hearty slice of pizza” during the event.

Executive Director Travis Owsley said he was approached by Excess because they wanted to connect with the community, and he immediately jumped on the opportunity. Excess Telecom is a government-funded carrier that provides free smartphones to eligible low-income families.

“She said the most I could do was 100, I said well come down and we’ll help get the word out. Let’s help these families in need with telephones,” Owsley said.

began serving meals in 2020, and Owsley said it’s great to see the community in Kendall-Perkins Park still enjoying the free food and music.

In addition to the phones and food, Beverly’s Hearty Slice also handed out $25 Walmart gift cards, as some community members had said they were looking for grocery assistance.

“Any need I see or even am told about … I want to try to find a way to execute and help these families,” Owsley said.

At their next event on June 2, he plans to give scholarships to five local high school students pluse roughly 50 vouchers to OMU customers.
