Last week, Owensboro Times followed The Pet Manny, Sam Boyd, as he and his 1-year-old giant schnauzer, Dean, prepared for the River Valley Cluster Dog Show at the Owensboro Convention Center.

Dean and his shiny black coat made their first appearance Saturday and were able to come away with the title of Winner’s Dog, also known as Best in Class. Dean did come up short in another competition, losing to his father, for Best in Breed.

Boyd said that it was a good first experience.

“We were proud of him,” Boyd said. “We needed to get the first one out of the way.”

Although this was the first dog show for both Boyd and Dean, it appears to be the first of many. Boyd said they will be back on the road next week en route to the Bluegrass Classic Dog Show in Lexington.

“This was a good confidence builder for us,” Boyd said, “Next week we compete in Lexington where there will be more dogs of his breed.”

Hopefully, for Dean’s sake, none of those dogs are relatives.
