Although Philpot East voted in approval of becoming a “wet” precinct, the annual Daviess County Lions Club Fair will not be incorporating a temporary liquor license for the venue, and the fair will continue being focused on family.

“No, we have no intention of doing that,” said Joan Hayden, secretary of the Daviess County Lions Club Fair board of directors. “We’ve always made it a family affair, a family-friendly event. With kids being there, families come night after night because they enjoy it the way it is.”

From Hayden’s perspective, the choice to abstain from serving alcohol at the fairgrounds comes in part from a “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” mentality. Hayden said last year’s fair won so much praise that she doesn’t feel the need to change it.

“We’ll keep it the way it’s always been,” Hayden said. “All the comments on Facebook, after last year’s fair, were so positive. Everyone talked about how enjoyable it was, how clean everything was. We added a lot of events to make it even better.”

By not including alcohol, Hayden doesn’t have to worry about some of the technicalities other events deal with, such as being approved and paying for a temporary liquor license, as well as hiring the extra security, which would be required.

“Security is always there during the fair. We’ve had a few instances where deputies were called out to the [fairground] parking lot because of a fight, or maybe because somebody was drinking out there,” Hayden said.

However, while Hayden feels while those instances are expected when thousands of people gather together, she feels they’re a far cry from the potential issues that could occur if alcohol were to be allowed at the fairgrounds.
