Owensboro Health Regional Hospital welcomed its first baby of the new year on Sunday morning, with the birth of Alexander R. Young.

Born at 8:34 a.m., Alexander weighed in at 7 lbs 5 oz and measured 20 inches long. His parents, high school sweethearts Alishia Young, 24, and Zachary Young, 26 —both from Owensboro — were thrilled to welcome their first child into the world.

Alishia was in labor for 28 hours before giving birth, which was delivered by Dr. Angela Dawson, an obstetrician and gynecologist at OHRH. This was Dawson’s first time delivering the first baby of the year in 15 years at OHRH.

Mindy Jones, manager of the mother-baby unit at OHRH, presented the Young family with a gift basket to celebrate the special occasion.

The Youngs said they were grateful for Dawson and said their care was very good from everyone involved, with some nurses staying past their shift to make sure things went well with the delivery.
