Whipt Creations is a new locally owned catering business that specializes in classic southern comfort food and also offers desserts for customers with a sweet tooth. Owner Ashley Morris said the entire Whipt menu is customizable, and recipes are a blend of inspiration between dishes from Owensboro and Charleston, South Carolina.
Morris said she lived in Charleston for 8 years and noticed they had a different take on southern-style recipes, relying heavily on fried fish, red beans, rice and other delicacies.
“Around here you don’t get too much of that. So whenever I was living down there I was introduced to a whole new world of food,” Morris said.
Morris said she’s had a passion for cooking since she was younger, watching her parents make food out of what they had in the garden. As she got older, she dabbled in barbecuing and traditional kitchen cooking.
“It’s a love language. It’s just something different that I don’t know how to explain,” she said of her passion for cooking. “When the conversation is about food, anybody can talk about that.”
When Morris first launched Whipt, she was making box lunches; eventually her clientele grew large enough that she thought it would be good to pivot into catering.
Now Whipt is predominantly a catering business providing soul food and other dishes, additionally offering “”sweet treats” and honoring special requests.
Morris also stressed that she tries to offer low-carb menu items. She said that inspiration comes from just recently losing over 100 pounds herself. She said she would make her own food like low-carb tortillas, bread and other options.
