Imagine being able to escape the world for a bit, totally letting go of your stress and tuning out from everything happening around you. It’s possible at Free Your Mind, Body and Soul Wellness.

The health spa at 2864 W. Parrish Ave., Suite G, opened in April bringing float therapy to Owensboro. Previously, the closest options for the treatment were in Louisville or Nashville.

The float pods, a.k.a. sensory deprivation tanks, contain 1,000 pounds of Epsom salts in 100 gallons of water — meaning any size person will float on their back without having to fight gravity. The tanks are also sound-proof to block out distractions. And, with the water at 93.5 degrees — the skin-receptor neutral temperature, you can forget it’s there.

While a 90-minute session is standard, the wellness center offers introductory packages and specials starting at just 30 minutes.

After each use, the pod water is cleaned by a combination of methods. Hydrogen peroxide is added and filtered and then ozone lighting is used. The salt itself, is also a natural anti-microbial and antiseptic.

“People who have tried it, love it,” said Melissa Logsdon, who owns the spa with Gary Lewis.

The couple opened the wellness center as a way to bring healing options to Owensboro, largely because they had been seeking out therapies — like float pods — for their son, Jansen.

At just 7 months old, Jansen suffered a traumatic brain injury. The services offered at the wellness center are ones that have been used to help Jansen in his development over the past four years.

Float therapy is just the beginning.

They also offer an infrared sauna with medical-grade chromotherapy. Unlike traditional steam saunas, Logsdon said, the infrared sauna is a dry heat which penetrates deeper to release more toxins. While in the sauna, users can opt to have different colors of light projected onto their body to stimulate healing and health. Each color offers different benefits.

Ionic foot detoxing is a popular service at the center and is done by a machine which releases ions through your body.

“It energizes your organs to release waste and things your body’s having trouble processing,” Logsdon said. “It gives it a boost to help it process on its own.”

They also have two services, a chi machine and dry body brushing, which both focus on improving the lymphatic system.

Logsdon is also certified in myofascial release, a light pressure stretching technique that helps eliminate pain and chronic fatigue.

“You might have pain in your leg,” Lewis explained, “but she knows how to tell where it’s coming from. It might hurt in your leg but it could be coming from your shoulder.”

The spa also offers therapy to the community through free sessions. On the third Sunday of each month, they allow free float sessions for special-needs adults and children, veterans and first responders. In the month of October, that offer is extended to breast cancer patients. While walk-ins are usually welcome, these sessions do require an appointment.

Pricing and more info about each service can be found online at www.fymwellness.com, and they accept health savings accounts (HSA) and flex-plans.

“Come give us a shot,” Lewis said.
