Parents and guardians may bring children to the Owensboro Health Medical Group Children’s Center at 1000 Breckenridge Street for a flu shot on Dec. 5 from 4 to 6 p.m. No appointment is necessary for the clinic.

According to Owensboro Health’s website, the flu is a contagious infection of the lungs, nose and throat caused by the influenza virus. Influenza A usually is most prevalent in early winter and early spring, while influenza B tends to appear throughout the year.

In a best case scenario, the flu shot is about 70 percent effective at preventing people from getting the flu.

According to their website, the effectiveness depends on how well the vaccine matches the strains that are circulating. Sometimes who is most at risk varies with the strain, and a lot of it depends on previous immunity and exposures.

If you cannot make it to the clinic, you may call the Children’s Center anytime after Dec. 5 to schedule a vaccination. The number is 270-688-4480.
