Dr. Joseph A. Polio recently performed the first ankle replacement surgery in the Owensboro area. Polio is a fellowship-trained orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon with Advanced Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine.

“Total ankle replacement is an orthopedic procedure for patients with advanced ankle arthritis. It has allowed patients who have suffered significant pain and decreased mobility to gain relief and renewed mobility,” Polio said. “Ankle replacement is an alternative to ankle fusion and is a technically demanding procedure. Research supports that the success of total ankle replacement is attributed to improved surgical techniques used by properly trained orthopedic foot and ankle surgeons.”

Polio offers complete orthopedic care for the foot and ankle ranging from nonsurgical treatments, minimally invasive bunion procedure, ankle and foot surgery, sport injuries, ankle instability, ankle replacement, foot and ankle fractures, advanced reconstructions, diabetic care, limb salvage and more.

According to Advanced, Polio holds the distinction of being the first and only fellowship-trained foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon in the region.

Advanced is now offering ankle replacement surgery in Owensboro and surrounding areas. Patients seeking specialized foot and ankle care from the practice can call 270-926-4100 to be seen at Ridgecrest Medical Park, located at 2831 New Hartford Road.
