Planet Fitness, the popular “judgement-free” gym chain, is set to open a second location in Owensboro. The new location will occupy just under 23,000 square feet in the space formerly home to Burkes Outlet.
Current plans call for the club to be open by the end of 2023 with presale memberships and employee recruitment starting this fall. Current members will also have the opportunity to transfer to the new location at the time of opening.
The second Owensboro location will employ 8-10 full-time workers and 16-20 part-time team members. The club will be open and staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Director of Operations Jeremy Smith said Monday that construction on the new gym has not yet begun, as he only signed the lease at the mall just under a month ago.
“Hopefully this means growth for us having both of these locations across town,” he said.
Planet Fitness is known for its affordable memberships and wide range of fitness equipment, as well as its “lunk alarm,” which is used to discourage grunting and loud behavior in the gym.
Planet Fitness clubs offer more than 100 cardio and strength equipment pieces, 30-Minute Circuit training areas and functional training as well as amenities such as full-service locker rooms, tanning, massage chairs and HydroMassage beds.
Plans start as low as $10 a month with no commitment. In addition, for $24.99/month, Planet Fitness Black Card members receive the added benefits including the ability to bring a guest every time, access to HydroMassage beds and massage chairs, the ability to work out at any of the 2,400+ Planet Fitness locations, and more.
Planet Fitness already has a location in Owensboro at 3621 KY 54, which opened in 2015.
“From the day we opened our first Owensboro Planet Fitness seven years ago, we were excited to further explore a second location in the community,” said Glow Brands CEO Rick Kueber, who leads the Planet Fitness franchise group. Glow Brands is a franchise division of Planet Fitness. “The Towne Square location will expand the Judgement Free Zone, affordable fitness and accessibility to another area of Owensboro.”
