A Special Weather Statement was issued early this morning from the National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky.

According to the NWS, rain chances will be ramping up today and continuing tonight, as the remnants from tropical depression Gordon work their way across the Mississippi and Ohio river valleys.

Storm total rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are forecast across much of western Kentucky, with the heaviest totals falling in close proximity to the Ohio River. Widespread flooding, however, is
not anticipated at this time.

The severity of the weather and rain has caused an increase in accidents throughout the Owensboro area today, including the Bypass.

The Owensboro Police Department is advising drivers to “drive with due regard and be as cautious as you can…slow down and use extra caution and give yourself extra time” on the road.

“Any time there is inclement weather we have an increase in accidents,” OPD said, but drivers need to heed the warnings and recognize the need for more cautious driving.
