E-Gals win tourney; Soccer, volleball results

“Yesterday in Sports” brings you the highlights from sports in Owensboro and Daviess County.

VOLLEYBALL
Apollo, Owensboro Catholic compete in tournament
The E-Gals (28-7) won the Toyota of Hopkinsville Western KY Smackdown tournament after going 5-0 on the weekend. Saturday, they beat Crittenden County 2-1 (25-13, 22-25, 25-13) to start the day. They then beat Logan County 2-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-18) before beating Caldwell County 2-0 (25-15, 25-16) in the championship match.

Leading the team Saturday were Natalie Ewing (29 kills, 8 blocks), Jenna McMillen (23 kills, 19 digs), Carlee Widmer (72 assists, 11 kills), Brylee Rhodes (16 kills, 9 blocks), Hallie Wilson (29 digs) and Anslee Hopewell (18 digs).

Apollo now plays Owensboro at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the first round of the District 9 tournament, which is played at Daviess County. AHS won both meetings this season.

Owensboro Catholic (16-12) also competed in the tournament. They won 2-0 (25-20, 25-17) against Hopkinsville, but lost 2-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-12) to University Heights. No stats were available. They now play Daviess County at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the first round of the District 9 tournament. OCHS won both meetings this season.

BOYS SOCCER
Apollo 1, Madisonville-North Hopkins 1
The Eagles (8-7-4) finished the regular season with a tie on the road. The lone goal came from Wes Knott. Apollo will now play Owensboro at Shifley Park in the first round of the District 9 tournament at 7:30 p.m. Monday. The two split their regular season matches, with each team getting a 1-0 win.
