Owensboro drivers will notice at least two new stoplights going up in high traffic areas. Although neither are operational, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Public Information Officer Keith Todd said motorists should expect them to be functional soon.

The light at Southtown Boulevard and Carter Road has been installed, but Todd said workers are waiting for a third part company to move a fiber optic cable before the light can be turned on.

A light was added to this intersection because of the number of rear-end collisions that occurred on Southtown Boulevard and the traffic volume, which Todd estimated to be nearly 12,000 vehicles per day.

Todd said the other prominent traffic light installation is on Frederica Street at the new Gulfstream Commercial Services’ The Shoppes at 3800, a mixed-use development which will include new retail and restaurant and space for multi-family residences and a hotel.

“That light is being paid for by the developer, based on a traffic impact study and the number of vehicles expected to come in and out of the shopping center,” Todd said.

According to Todd, Gulfstream is paying for both the signal and turn lane, construction and installation of which is being conducted by KYTC.

KYTC will announce when these lights will go into an active state with at least two to three days notice, Todd said. The signals will first flash yellow for one week prior to turning on permanently.
