Authorities contain hazard after accident causes chemical spill, fire

According to a news release sent Friday, the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident at the 1700 block of W Harmon’s Ferry Road involving an aviation support vehicle, which was hauling agricultural chemicals.

The vehicle struck a utility pole and overturned causing a chemical spill and fire. The driver, 58-year-old David J. Mack of Galatin, Tenn., was not injured and was able to escape the heavily damaged vehicle prior to the it catching fire along with trees near the scene of the accident.

Mack was treated on scene for possible chemical exposure by Emergency Medical Services. The roadway was shut down for several hours for the accident, investigation and clean up. Daviess County Fire Department, Utica Fire Department, American Medical Response, Daviess County Emergency Management and U.S. Environmental Protective Agency assisted.

According to DCSO Chief Deputy Barry Smith, the EPA is overseeing the cleanup and the hazard is contained.
