The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Daviess County Middle School was met with excitement from a crowd of more than 200 Friday morning.

Speakers for the event included Daviess County Public School superintendent Matt Robbins, Board of Education chairman Tom Payne and DCMS principal Kelly Skeens. Other guests in attendance were former DCMS principals Mike Robinson and Gates Settle, former superintendent Ed L. Allen and board chairman Mike Clark.

The ceremony included a performance by the DCMS Choir, students who will be 8th graders when the new school is complete, in the Fall of 2021.

A sign designating the location of the new school was unveiled by students representing the four DCMS feeder schools — East View, Highland, Meadow Lands and Whitesville elementary schools.

Skeens said the groundbreaking ceremony was an exciting day for the students, staff and school community.

“We have kids here today who will be at the new school,” she said. “We are very excited about the plans. They are phenomenal.”

Skeens said everyone at DCMS is excited to have a school that is going to fit the needs of the students. One of the features Skeens mentioned is a 45,000 square-foot courtyard which she said will be used every day whether by classrooms of students or individuals.
