Legends manager Ryan Clark said that eight years ago, no local trail race existed, but the staff at Legends had a passion for trail running, so the Legends Spooky Trail Race began.

Created to “put on a good race,” Clark said that all proceeds from the event are given back to the Owensboro Parks and Recreation Department for trail maintenance.

With a race limit of 200 participants, runners travel four miles through Rudy Mines, part of the Ben Hawes trail system.

The prizes are not the typical medals. Since the race is held at an old coal mine, a woodburned pickaxe is given to the top 10 male and female overall finishers that has been custom decorated by local artist Jen Kramer.

“It is a cool axe and one of the most coveted trophies around,” Clark said.

Finishers also receive a medal, a decorated wooden disk cut from already downed trees on the trail.

After the race, there will be music, awards, costume-contest prizes and a cookout.

“It’s just really laid back,” said Clark of the event.

The registration is $35 and can be completed online. Also see Legends Spooky Trail Race event page for details.

The race is typically held close to Halloween, which is how the event got part of its name. This year’s event will be held Oct. 27 at 3 p.m.

Ben Hawes trail system is at 5687 West Highway 60.
