For the next five months, Owensboro Police Department will participate in a no shave fundraiser, allowing officers to donate money to grow beards.

Currently, officers are not permitted to grow beards, with mustaches being the only allowed facial hair. But until February, officer who donate money can grow a beard up to one inch.

“Officers obviously enjoy being able to grow facial hair, but the best part of participating is know that with the money raised we get to give back to members of our community,” said OPD Public Information Officer Andrew Boggess.

This is the fifth year for the fundraiser, which raises money for OPD’s Operation Santa, a food donation program during the holiday season and Camp K.O.P.S, a youth crime prevention program.

“This is the fifth year of this fundraiser, and it has grown to five months allowing for even more money to be raised for these events,” Boggess said.

OPD Chief Art Ealum recognized the enthusiasm that this idea brought to several officers and decided to implement it. More than 60 OPD members participate in the no shave initiative, and Boggess expects the department will raise more than $7,000.

The community is able to donate OPD’s fund raising cause, Boggess said, encouraging those interested to call or stop by the station located at 222 E 9th St.
