The City of Owensboro and family members of the late Mayor Waymond Morris unveiled a plaque Saturday morning honoring Morris and his contributions to Waymond Morris Park. Former players, students and coworkers came out to honor Morris.
Morris is the longest elected official in the City’s history; serving the City of Owensboro as a city commissioner, mayor pro tem, and mayor for a total of 21 years.
Mayor Tom Watson said it’s a big deal to have served as long as Morris.
Prior to his time as an elected official, he dedicated 36 years as a teacher and football coach at Russellville and Daviess County High Schools, assistant principal at Apollo High School, and principal at Daviess County High School.
“I know what a great guy he is,” Watson said. “He had a passion for the game of football. He was an excellent mentor to many athletes, students and coworkers.”
Watson said Morris will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to citizens of all ages in Daviess County.
In December 2004, Southwest Park was renamed Waymond Morris Park in his honor.
Morris played a large role in securing the funding for the park and the development of the football complex.
Watson said the plaque will serve to honor his connections to the park and to educate future generations on Morris’s contributions to Owensboro.
