The City of Whitesville received a $78,000 grant from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) to repair Franklin Street. These improvements will include repaving the street and filling in a number of potholes.

According to Whitesville Mayor Patsy Mayfield, Franklin Street is the busiest road in the city of 552 people.

“It’s the most traveled road up here in Whitesville,” she said. “All the school busses go down Franklin Street because we’ve got a school back there.”

Mayfield said Whitesville applied for the grant around two months ago and found out the grant had been received in a special called City commission meeting Monday. Commissioner of Secondary and Rural Roads Gray Tomblyn and Kentucky Field Representative Mark Welch presented Whitesville with the $78,200 grant.

Though Mayfield said Whitesville had applied for more funding than was received, she was still extremely grateful for the amount her City was given.

“We had no idea what we’d get,” she said. “We were thrilled to get that amount. It feels good for a small city to be awarded that much money.”

Mayfield said KYTC will begin repatching and resurfacing Franklin Street in the near future.
