For over 15 years, the Western Kentucky Botanical Garden has hosted a Soup Day to benefit the Goodfellows Club of Owensboro.

For this year’s WKGB Soup Day being held Dec. 6, the Garden has moved the event location to Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church’s Parish Hall in hopes of attracting more people as well as offering a more central location for those that come during their work day.

The Garden has also introduced a new initiative to get more donations for Goodfellows Club.

Local community members will be providing the homemade soups served at the event and participants will vote for their favorite soup by submitting monetary donations.

“We have eight local community members volunteering their time and soup for this contest,” said Laurna Strehl, manager of Western Kentucky Botanical Garden.

Those who will be making soups for the event are City Commissioner Larry Conder, City Commissioner Pam Smith-Wright, real estate agent Gail Niehaus, Vice President at US Bank Patty Millay, Owner of Gourmet Meals To Go Katie Wimsatt, Director of Community Outreach at Wendell Foster John Gleason and 14-year-old culinary novice Daniel Gray.

Gray, who is interested in cooking and the culinary arts, has been on two segments of WEHT’s Local Lifestyles with Ange Humphrey. He will be donating his time, including missing school for the event, and money to pay for the ingredients, just as everyone else in the contest.

“How amazing and heartwarming to hear that a child is helping children in his very own community?” Strehl said.

All monies raised at the event will be donated to Goodfellows Club, which has been serving residents in Daviess County for over 100 years. The club initially began during the holiday season but now serves the needs of Daviess County children year-round.

Strehl said that soup cooks were chosen for their Facebook presence as well as people who have been supportive of the Garden.

Soup will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A suggested donation of $10 is requested for those attending the lunch, which also includes a drink and dessert.

Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church is located at 609 East 4th Street.
