A female federal inmate serving time at the Daviess County Detention Center is in critical condition after a suicide attempt that occurred in the early morning hours of Nov. 1.

A press release from DCDC states the inmate was discovered around 12:50 a.m. in the female general population housing unit.

“A female deputy was alerted to the cell by another inmate, where she located a female federal inmate hanging and unresponsive,” the release says.

Other inmates in the vicinity helped the deputy in physically securing the inmate. The deputy radioed a suicide attempt and DCDC staff immediately began to render CPR and other life-sustaining measures on the inmate, while the control room operator contacted 911.

The Daviess County Fire Department and EMS personnel responded to DCDC and the inmate was transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital via ambulance at around 1:10 a.m.

“The housing unit was placed on lockdown after the incident and Kentucky State Police was notified,” the release says. “DCDC’s preliminary investigation revealed that the inmate was present for the facility headcount around 11:15 p.m. and surveillance rounds were conducted on the inmate leading up to the time of this incident.”

DCDC confirmed that foul play is not suspected in this incident, and that the inmate was a federal detainee being housed at the facility since late August 2019. The inmate was not on any suicide prevention protocol at the time of the incident.

“She did not have any triage risk factors and no reported history of suicide attempts while at the facility,” the jail stated. “The U.S. Marshals Service was notified, but the name of the female inmate is not being released at this time.”

DCDC confirmed that the female inmate is from out of state and that the investigation is ongoing.
