Officials issue white flag event through Tuesday night

The Daviess County Emergency Management Agency has issued a white flag event through Tuesday night, with overnight wind chill expected to be at or below 15°F.

Monday night, the temperature is expected to drop to 17°F with a wind chill of 2°F and Tuesday night, the temperature is expected to be 12°F with a wind chill of 6°F.

During a White Flag Event, participating homeless shelters are requested to place a white flag on their facility’s exterior door, which shall publicly convey that extra bed space may be available.

A night time warming shelter is available at St. Benedict’s Homeless Shelter, located at 1001 W Seventh Street. Meals are available at the Daniel Pitino Shelter. For more information, please contact Harry Pedigo at 270-315-4419.

Owensboro Transit System will provide free bus transportation to either Daniel Pitino or St. Benedict’s shelters between the hours of 4-6 p.m. on white flag nights. For those without transportation in rural areas of Daviess County (outside Owensboro city limits), GRITS may provide transportation to the Daniel Pitino Shelter, but only during the hours of 5-6 p.m. that evening.

According to the National Weather Service Paducah Office’s forecast, no other nights are expected to meet white flag criteria through Sunday.
