Amanda and Billy Boarman hold the Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky’s Heartford House close to their hearts.

Five years ago, Billy’s brother Robby was at Heartford House for two weeks before dying. Amanda said Robby received wonderful care during his time there, and since then the Boarman family has been donating for improvements to the Heartford House.

“We have sponsored bricks in Robby’s name that line the walkways, sponsored the treat cart that goes in and out of the patients’ rooms and sponsored some of the landscaping that surrounds the Heartford House,” Amanda said.

So when their neighbor Anna Simpson — who is also a volunteer at the Heartford House — told them how bad the on-property lake was looking, the Boarmans created a GoFundMe page.

The repair estimate for the lake is $14,000, according to Brenda Knollenberg, development manager of Hospice.

“The lake has developed a leak and is not allowing the water to stay contained within, leaving an empty basin,” the Boarmans wrote on the fundraiser page.

Between the GoFundMe page and other donations, more than $6,000 was raised in the first week. Some grants have also been awarded to Hospice for the project.

Knollenberg said there are almost 11 acres to care for at the Heartford House and that help from the community is essential for landscaping projects.

Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky still needs $2,700 to fund the entire project and will continue to accept donations.

“We are confident that we will meet our goal,” Knollenberg said.
