The family-owned Bookers Service Station announced it will be shutting its doors after nearly seven decades of service in Owensboro. Located at 2821 West Parrish Avenue, they will close permanently Feb. 28.

Owner Nathan Booker said it has been bittersweet.

“This was the right time to go out on a good note,” said Booker. “I’m not going out thinking I’ve been defeated. We’re not thinking that we’ve done something wrong. We’ve done everything that we could to carry on the legacy that was started.”

Booker attributed going out of business to competing forces and changing times.

“People are spending money, just not here,” Booker said. “We’re on a smaller scale.”

Bookers was started in 1950 by Booker’s grandparents, Louis and Annie Booker.

“The decision we’re making is what’s best for our family,” he said, adding he feels proud.
