Audubon Area Community Service’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is being extended to April 30. LIHEAP offers financial assistance for home energy costs for applicable patrons across the seven-county Green River Area Development District.

LIHEAP serves to help those in need during the colder months, and the program normally runs from Nov. 4-March 31. LIHEAP’s crisis component starts in January and runs until available funds have been expended.

The LIHEAP crisis component requires applicants to present proof of social security numbers or permanent residence cards for each member of the household, proof of household income from the previous month, the most current heating bill, a statement from the landlord if heating is included in the rent, a statement from the utility company if the household is participating in a pre-pay electric program, the account number and name on the account for main heating fuel sources and electric bill.

The crisis component additionally requires applicants to present a disconnection notice. If wood, coal, propane or kerosene is used as the primary heat source, applicants must be within four days of running out.

“Benefits for the crisis component may take the form of fuel deliveries or service reconnections,” AACS said. “Crisis relief will be provided within 48 hours, or within 18 hours if facing a life-threatening situation.”

Robyn Mattingly, social services support director, said applications will be received via phone call only at this time. Those interested in applying can call between 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Monday-Friday.

“We will process either a disconnect notice or past due notice,” Mattingly said. “Interested persons may call their respective county Audubon Area Community Services office for details or to apply.”
