A 27-year-old woman was arrested over the weekend on multiple felony charges after she reported to police that her child had been abducted from the Sleep Inn on Bon Harbor Hills Drive.

Brittney Cornett-Payton appeared before Judge David Payne and pleaded not guilty Monday to seven charges of child endangerment and abandonment, possession of meth and resisting arrest.

Her bond was set at $35,000 cash. Cornett’s next court appearance is Wednesday.

The Owensboro Police Department was dispatched about 5:45 a.m. to the Habor Hills area Sunday after receiving a report from Cornett that her child had been abducted at the Sleep Inn.

When officers arrived, they met Cornett with her three juvenile children at a gas station across from the hotel, according to court documents.

Cornett told police that someone had broken into her hotel room and kidnapped her three year old. Police indicated suspected Cornett was under the influence of illegal drugs.

An officer went to the room where Cornett was staying and found the door ajar with her 3-year-old child sleeping alone inside.

Officers searched the room and found meth and drug paraphernalia among Cornett’s belongings, according to court documents.

Police said Cornett was belligerent and combative when they arrested her and that she also tried to kick the rear passenger window out from inside of the police cruiser.

Cornett was taken to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital before being booked into the Daviess County Jail and charged with the abandonment of a minor, endangering the welfare of a minor, possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, public intoxication, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
