The Senior Community Center of Owensboro-Daviess County will still be delivering meals to seniors, though the senior center itself will not hold activities and events as scheduled.

“We are still serving home-delivered meals and congregation meals at five locations on a grab-and-go basis,” said Director Dana Peveler. “We’re really grateful to be able to keep those meals going out. That part of the program is so critical.”

Those meals will be sealed and packaged to help prevent community spread of the novel coronavirus, Peveler added.

The decision to close the site was based on a recommendation from Gov. Andy Beshear, Peveler said. The Department of Aging and Individual Living made the call, and the Green River Area Development District followed suit.

“We are still offering transportation to doctor’s offices and the grocery store,” Peveler said.

The Senior Community Center will be closed until further notice and no timeframe for reopening has been made at this time.

Because socialization is so important to the seniors Peveler and her team serves, the senior community center and Owensboro Health worked together to come up with a plan for seniors who can’t enjoy the community center during this time.

“If the community wouldn’t mind sending in cards, brain teasers or puzzles, we’ll put those in a bag with their lunch so they have something to look forward to and stay engaged,” Peveler said.

Those items can be brought to the senior community center, located at 1650 W. 2nd St.
