The largest annual fundraiser for Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky was supposed to be Saturday, but it has been postponed until Oct. 17 due to the coronavirus.
The Kentucky Derby-themed Spring Fling Event features a dinner, dancing, silent and live auctions — but it’s just as important are the funds raised.
“Many people come to Spring Fling because it is a fun event,” said Brenda Knollenberg, development manager. “But what they may not realize is that funding raised that night helps us ensure that no one is ever turned away from hospice services for inability to pay. And that is such an important part of our mission.”
Since most people will be staying home this Saturday, Knollenberg said their organization wanted to have some fun and raise some of the funding now that normally comes in through Spring Fling by hosting an online event they’re calling “Win, Place and No Show.”
“Our team is out there – day in and day out. In the midst of this pandemic, our work doesn’t stop,” she said. “We are still out serving folks who need help through our hospice and palliative care services, and who may not have the ability to pay. They are never turned away from Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky because they don’t have a payer source for the services we provide. Money raised from our ‘Win, Place and No Show’ non-event will help make sure that funding is available.”
The event website will go live Wednesday to start accepting donations. On Friday and Saturday, an online silent auction will be held.
“People will be able to access the event website from our social media accounts,” Knollenberg said. “All it takes is your name, phone number, email address and a credit card to get started bidding.”
Once the silent auction ends, winners will be contacted regarding how to pick up their items.
Knollenberg said they are promoting some other fun things to coincide with the “Win, Place and No Show” fundraiser on social media and a “no show” Saturday night, too.
“We’re asking people to dress up as if they are coming to Spring Fling or the Derby, take pictures of themselves ‘No Showing’ at home and then post them on social media,” she said. “We’re also going to recommend some Derby-type activities so they can take advantage of celebrating a great Kentucky tradition, all while staying healthy at home.”
