Agencies across Owensboro have been doing their part to give back by donating food to those in need. With the social distancing recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, things are a little trickier, but each organization has adapted to the 6-foot guidelines in their own ways.

Operation Club Cares, recently started by the Cliff Hagan Boys & Girls Club, is donating 100 bags of food and household supplies each week to families of Club members at the Mike Horn Unit on Buckland Square, as well as at the Henderson Unit.

“In order to provide social distancing, the Club will set up a table in front of each location and families are asked to send one person per family to the table to receive the bag of groceries,” said Steve Winkler.

The limit is one bag per family and the initiative will run each Friday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Girls Inc. is serving meals on a weekly basis through a partnership with Bar Louie. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at noon, meals can be picked up at the organization’s Rolling Heights site.

Girls Inc. will enforce social distancing by placing the meals on a table that will not be monitored by any staff members. Those in need can pick up meals on their own from the table. The food is served on a first-come, first-serve basis and individuals can take what they need.

Meals are also provided on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to 150 people in the community through a Mount Cares Mission program hosted by Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.

“We try to do the youth and the elderly, and anyone who can’t get out of their home to get lunch, we go to their house and knock on their doors and offer that to them,” said Stephanie Boling, a member of the church.

Paper bag lunches are prepared by church members the day of, and then a group of youth from the church wear personal protection equipment as they go around the community and offer the meals to those in need, with a focus on the elderly who might not otherwise have a safe way to acquire food.
