Ben’s Soft Pretzels and the Owensboro Islamic Center are two of the latest groups in the community donating to essential workers or others in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ben’s Soft Pretzels has been partnering with the community to show appreciation to front-line workers by significantly reducing their prices.

A $30 donation sponsors a pretzel pack — worth almost $90 — to front-line workers. The pack includes 20 soft pretzels, 20 dipping sauces and a message delivered to a location of choice such as hospitals, fire stations and nursing homes.

“We’re all about trying to brighten people’s day, that’s our goal,” said owner Ron Williams.

Williams said he plans to continue the partnership for at least two more weeks.

“We hope we’ve been able to support the community in partnering with others,” he said. “We appreciate everybody that helps. Hopefully, we have been able to brighten a few people’s days in the process.”

Members of the Owensboro Islamic Center gave about a dozen bags of food on Friday in their first of a new weekly effort to help the community.

The Mobile Food Pantry, which is based out of Evansville, had about 50 bags prepared with nonperishable items such as canned goods, pasta and snacks.

Naheed Murtaza, a member of the Islamic Center, said she’s hoping more people will show up next time.

“I think it went well for the first time and we hope that word gets out that we’ll continue to be here for the community,” Murtaza said.

The local Islamic Center is working with the Islamic Society of Evansville and MAISHA to host the food drive from 5-6 p.m. every Friday at the center, located at 3131 W. Alvey Park Drive.
