The Daviess County High School academic team participated in a virtual competition last month, and they were recently notified that they captured the Kentucky state championship and placed sixth in the nation.
The “3-2-1” competition is held twice a year – in the fall and spring. The year’s spring contest featured 89 teams from across the country.
Students are presented with a triad of visual or auditory clues about a specific subject. The first clue, which is the most difficult, is worth three points if the team answers correctly. If the team requires a second clue, the answer is worth two points. If the team requires the third clue, the answer is worth one point. Because the answer is the same for all three clues, a team can earn six points per question.
Teams have two hours to complete 80 triads of 240 questions.
Students representing DCHS in the competition were Carter Bean, Caitlyn Bell, Andrew Ellis, Frederik Mendoza-Ulken, Noah Owen, Hope Ramming, Maci Sanders, Preston Smith, Luke Taylor, Emmylou Tidwell, Christian Vincent and Kate Wahnsiedler.
The DCHS Academic Team is coached by Ann Koshy, who also serves as a chemistry and forensics teacher at DCHS and is the co-commissioner of the Pennyrile academic league.
