Daviess County High School has rescheduled diploma distribution for the Class of 2020 in response to forecasts of inclement weather, including potentially severe thunderstorms.
DCHS will now distribute diplomas from 5:30-8:30 pm. Monday. Seniors and families will receive specific information regarding their scheduled times of arrival, staging areas and other details. The program was originally set for Friday evening.
Apollo and Heritage Park high schools are monitoring weather forecasts and will make a final decision Thursday afternoon regarding whether plans can go forward as currently scheduled on Saturday. Apollo is scheduled to distribute diplomas from 4-6 p.m., while Heritage Park is scheduled to do so from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
“Throughout this process, we have made decisions based on the safety, health and well-being of our students, families and staff,” said Daviess County Public Schools Superintendent Matt Robbins. “As we look ahead at forecasts for weather conditions for Friday, we believe it is our responsibility to reschedule the DCHS diploma distribution programs to avoid potentially hazardous weather conditions.”
Students will arrive in vehicles with members of their immediate households and will have the opportunity to be photographed and videotaped at designated areas with special backdrops.
Plans were developed in compliance with Kentucky Department of Education recommendations with approval from the Green River District Health Department. Students, families and high school representatives will practice physical distancing and other safe behaviors throughout these ceremonies.
In responding to local, state and federal guidelines regarding safety precautions relating to COVID-19, DCPS has delayed in-person graduation ceremonies until such a time as restrictions on large public gatherings are lifted.
Information will be communicated to graduates and their families as those opportunities become available and details are finalized. The district has developed plans for in-person graduation ceremonies and remains committed to hosting these important milestone celebrations for the Class of 2020.
