Fitness centers in Owensboro are still closed after Gov. Andy Beshear’s announcement that they will not reopen as a part of phase one of the “Healthy at Work” initiatives. The staff at Owensboro Health Healthpark, however, have been busy assisting other departments and putting procedures in place for when they can open their doors again.

“We value our members and look forward to the opportunity to reopen the facility and welcome our members back into the health and fitness center,” said Collette Carter, director of the Healthpark.

The staff has been making preparations for reopening that focus on safety and the well-being of staff and members, said marketing specialist Alex Cochenour. These include extra cleaning procedures, physical distancing guides and looking at a phasing-in approach to re-implement services.

Carter said they’ve also utilized the shutdown to repaint both the pool and stripes on the track, retile the locker room wet areas, work on equipment, and other general facility maintenance.

“Members can expect to see some differences with our operations, including having temperature checks at entrances and some capacity limitations with areas,” Carter said.

Healthpark members are not being charged with membership dues during the temporary closure. All memberships will remain frozen and auto-pay drafts will not occur until the center opens.

Cochenour said the shutdown has increased opportunities for staff to deliver services and programs online.

The staff has also been supporting daily operations of Owensboro Health Medical Group and Owensboro Health by assisting with facility entrance screenings.

Cochenour said OH will follow the recommendations from the CDC and guidelines from the governor for reopening.
