Local Gold Star mother Cathy Mullins’ performance of the national anthem will be aired on national TV prior to the Monday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series Memorial Day race. The anthem will be aired via the Performance Racing Network and nationwide through the FS1 network.

Because no fans are allowed at the Charlotte Motor Speedway during this time, Mullins’ recorded performance will be broadcast just before the race, scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. CST. The video was taken during this year’s National Day of Prayer.

Mullins said officials with the race wanted to share her story on Fox and post Brandon’s picture in honor of his sacrifice.

“It was only going to show on the racing network initially, not the national network,” Mullins said. “I am so, so honored.”

Mullins’ son, Army Spc. Brandon Mullins, was killed in combat in Afghanistan on Aug. 25, 2011. Since then, Mullins has spearheaded The Brandon Scott Mullins Memorial Foundation and has brought awareness to the importance of observing Memorial Day.

Mullins was originally planning to attend the event in person, but COVID-19 stipulations prevented that from happening. That doesn’t bother Mullins because, as she said, this is Brandon’s story being told — and that’s what matters most to her.
