According to City officials, it’ll be a few weeks before it’s decided what to do about big events such as Owensboro’s fireworks show and the Owensboro Hydrofair.
The All-American Fourth of July Celebration is currently still slated for July 2, while the three-day hydrofair event is scheduled for August 14-16. Tim Ross, the City’s director of public events, said it’s still too early to make a call on the events.
“With any of the larger events, we’ll be under regulations from the governor’s office,” Ross said. “Events like the Fourth of July Fireworks show — we want to wait as long as we can. We’re not ready to make any decisions yet.”
Ross said it will likely be several more weeks before an announcement is made.
“We’re hopeful that late summer and early fall will be better [for holding big events],” he said. “We want to be realistic too.”
The City has put contingency plans in place for both events in case they get postponed, Ross added. It’s possible that both could be held in early fall if needed.
However, one of the United States’ most famous car races — The Great Race — has already been rescheduled for Aug. 26, and the cars will still be making a pit stop in Owensboro, Ross said.
Participants in the Great Race will cover more than 2,300 miles over nine days, starting in San Antonio and ending in Greenville, S.C. Racers are coming from all over the world to experience the City of Owensboro for an entire day.
“The whole race was postponed and pushed back for two months,” Ross said. “They come through multiple states, so they made plans to postpone because each state’s [social distancing regulations] are different.”
Though the Friday After 5 committee has canceled the 2020 season in its entirety, Ross said it’s possible that smaller music programs, such as Live on the Banks, could still happen.
“It’s smaller, there’s a more intimate crowd, and the event isn’t as big,” he said. “We want as much action downtown as we’re able to do.”
