Progress on bringing down Gabe’s Tower is coming along nicely City officials said Thursday, and there’s plenty of visual evidence to prove it.
Much of the paneling has come off the building’s structure, and the project is well into its environmental abatement phase. City officials are hoping to start the demolition process in early-to-mid June.
Assistant City Manager Lelan Hancock said he expects contractors will complete the removal of exterior paneling next week.
“They’ll begin demolition with a long-reach excavator after that,” he said.
Before the demolition phase begins, there’s a little work that needs to be done around the base of Gabe’s Tower. Soil will be laid around the base to soften the blow from pieces of the building that may fall to the ground during demolition.
Because of COVID-19, there will not be a public event held at the site when demolition begins.
“The virus has created a bit of an issue with holding an event,” Hancock said. “There won’t be any big event for it, but people can see the demolition as they drive by.”
