DCPS, OPS to host virtual summer camps for middle schoolers

The Youth Service Centers of Owensboro and Daviess County are teaming up to provide a Virtual Middle School Summer Camp for all students entering grades 6-8 this fall. The virtual camps offer a variety of enrichment opportunities to keep teens busy, learning and having fun — all while practicing safe social distancing.

Camps are open to students who will attend Burns, College View, Daviess County or Owensboro middle schools, as well as iMiddle. The link for registration can be found here.

The deadline to register is Friday, and the camps start Tuesday.

The camps are free and students will connect online via Zoom. Slots, supplies and prizes are limited so those who are interested should sign up as soon as possible.

Class topics and schedule are as follows:

Protect Yourself – 1 p.m. June 16
Kentucky State Police master trooper Corey King will share information about how to stay safe and keep personal information private in the world of technology. Five participants will have the opportunity to win a gaming headset.

Vaping: Myths and Realities – 2 p.m. June 17

Rebecca Horn of the Green River District Health Department will facilitate a discussion about the dangers and health risks of vaping.

Smart Money Teens – 2 p.m. June 18
Independence Bank will present information about budgeting, saving and spending.

DIY Summer Snacks – 1 p.m. June 19
Stacy Potts of the Daviess County Extension Office will demonstrate how to prepare quick and easy snacks perfect for the summer months. Food supplies will be available for pickup on June 18 for those who are registered for this class.

Tie-Dye T-Shirts – 1 p.m. June 22
Hadley Loucks, a teacher at Burns Middle School teacher, will demonstrate the art of tie-dye. T-shirts and supplies will be available for pickup for those who register for this class.

Teen COVID-19 Q&A – 1 p.m. June 23
Amy Brown of the Green River District Health Department and DCPS social worker Christy Dalton will address topics such as teen mental health, managing anxiety, mindfulness activities, the importance of social distancing and more. The first 50 students who register will receive a free “Choose Love Not Hate” T-shirt.

Hip Hop Dance – 1 p.m. June 24
LeAnne Musick of Musick Studios will teach an exciting introduction to hip hop culture with a 45-minute hip hop dance class.
